JOY IN TEACHING
Hello friends teaching is a great profession from so many years. Recently i had read an article on teaching by geeta dharmarajan founder of katha, an educationist who dislikes exams.her goal is to bring joy to the classroom.she is 71 years old as she came to delhi in 1987,a young women from a tamil brahmin family.she shocked to find kids in delhi barely read any books.there were hardly any books by Indian authors being published anyway. at the same time she got a chance visit to UNICEF made her aware that at that time,30 children died everyday of diarrhea.she immediately offered her services to UNICEF and Tamasha , a children's magzine which promoted health awareness through short stories and games born, which gave a big success and the idea that books could affect positive behavioural change cought the attention of the government and offered 5 rooms in Delhi slum to run a school and katha was born.Her concern has always been to ensure quality education should accessible to even the children in slum schools.
Geetanjali krishna realised the importance of every child as an individual with stories and a unique set of circumstances that enable her education.she got success today katha has 1,157 school partnerships across 17 states of India.She says proudly " our experience shows us that if we we're able to make a child laugh or feel happy to come to school ,more than half the battle is won".Her hardwork on translating the stories allowed diverse Indian readers to access the country's multi-lingual literary tradition.as she grew up listening to Tamil stories ,this made katha translations to link India to India ,
Due to ill health some years back forced her to downsize her work as doctors reckoned that she wont be able to survive more than 10 years after her surgery.In 2012 she got Padma Shri for her contribution to the field of literature and education.She suggested schools should teach and foster empathy.At katha she initiated a program called ECTC- Each Child Teach a Child under the 300M challenge.To accomplish this,katha has created the 300M Alliance of like -minded people and organisations . They also created India's first story-telling app .
A great conclusion had given by Geetanjali that she is confident that if everyone as educators can provide a learning environment in which the children enjoy themselves ,as they learn on their own and from each other.To have every Indian child not an education but the sheer joy of learning and reading.
